Rasmus Refer
Exploring the relationship between form, material and light.
Rasmus Refer is a Danish artist based in Copenhagen. Working across sculpture, relief and painting, he explores the relationship between form, material and light.
His practice is rooted in geometric abstraction and an interest in how a simple form can change through repetition, proportion and the qualities of a material. Steel, stone, bronze, aluminium and acrylic each bring their own character to his work—from the weight and solidity of black granite to the changing reflections of mirror-polished steel.
Light plays a central role. Reflective and translucent surfaces respond to their surroundings, allowing the appearance of a work to shift throughout the day and as the viewer moves around it. The result is an interaction between the artwork, the space and the person experiencing it.
In his recent U reliefs, Refer uses a single geometric form as the starting point for a series of compositions. Through repetition and variations in colour, surface and material, each work develops its own visual identity.
“My works should ideally radiate something aesthetically pleasing and simple. Something that can break the monotony and bring new light to everyday life.”
